Care Health Insurance: Premium Income Jumps 44% YoY
Care Health Insurance reported 44% year-on-year growth in September 2026 premium income, with Gross Direct Premium Income (GDPI) of ₹1,042 crore. That is well ahead of the general insurance industry’s average growth of 27% for the month.
The numbers
September GDPI: ₹1,042 crore, up 44% YoY
Market share: 3.45%, making it India’s second-largest standalone health insurer
Network: 288 branches and over 22,040 hospital tie-ups as of Q1 FY27
Earlier momentum: 41.9% GDPI growth in June 2026, when standalone health insurers grew 30.9% overall
Sector tailwinds
Standalone health insurers have been the fastest-growing part of non-life insurance, helped by GST relief on health policies and rising demand for specialised cover. Care Health’s FY26 GDPI grew 20.9% to ₹10,031 crore, so the September jump marks a clear acceleration.
The catch: profitability
Growth has come at a cost. In FY26, Care’s net earned premium grew only 14.3% against 22.1% growth in gross written premium, as ceded (reinsurance) premium rose 51%. Net claims rose 23.3%, and the combined ratio crossed 107%, meaning an underwriting loss of about ₹7 per ₹100 of premium earned. Reported profit after tax fell about 92% in FY26, with investment income bridging the gap.
What to watch
Whether claims ratios and the combined ratio improve as premium growth continues
Reinsurance costs, which are eating into net earned premium
Any progress on listing, as Care Health remains an unlisted company
Bottom line: The topline story is strong, but the market will look for profitable growth rather than premium volume alone.
